Journal A Day in the Life: Alex Crowder

In this series, we explore the rhythms and rituals of friends and people we admire. For our very first installment, we are thrilled to feature florist and founder of Field Studies Flora, Alex Crowder.

6 AM - Dress
“I wake up early, and after I’ve journaled, and had my tea or coffee, I love to get dressed. This is a part of the day I really look forward to, but I need to be quick, so over the years, I’ve learned to have a uniform of sorts: trousers, button-ups, and over layers. I rotate between different styles but the elements all remain the same. Today I’m wearing the Elementart Shirt and Workhorse Trousers in Chocolate Brown, which are so elegant and tailored but also unexpectedly sexy. I really love to wear Sam’s clothes because, while they bring out my confident businesswoman energy, there’s always a grounding softness there too.”

8 AM -  Commute
“By eight I’m usually at the studio, ready for a morning of hands-on work. I have an incredibly talented team of florists, a senior designer, and a production coordinator, and I’m in constant communication with them. I’ll spend several hours taking meetings, responding to emails and sketching for upcoming installs and special projects, before making my way into the city. I’ve picked up the habit of driving everywhere from the days when I was moving all of the arrangements by myself. Although I do it less as we’ve grown, somehow I always still have plenty to haul around.”

12 PM - Into the City
“I usually leave the studio around noon, bringing my Glean Coat and Mock Neck in case I need an extra layer. My route typically takes me downtown to Tribeca and Soho, where most of our clients are. Today, I am checking in on our install at Roman and Williams Guild to make sure it feels like the vision I designed. We work with a cast of rotating freelancers so training is vital. I always tell them: ‘Don’t make a floral arrangement, make an exaltation of nature–and lead with ingredients!’”

3 PM - Meetings
“Afternoons are for in-person meetings, and I always bring my notebook with me so I can sketch ideas out on the go. Sometimes it’s a store owner, other times an interview or a collaboration discussion. This variety is one of my favorite parts of the job. No two days are ever the same, and I get to meet the most fascinating people from all different kinds of fields.”

6 PM - Unwind
“I like to close my day with one of two rituals: a martini or a session at my local sauna. The sauna is a sanctuary for me–an hour in the heat helps melt away my cortisol. And The Odeon makes the best martini and burger in the city. Hands down.”
